The first day of the South Africa vs West Indies Test match in Centurion saw a remarkable performance from Aiden Markram, who scored a century to put South Africa in a strong position. However, the Proteas imploded in the second session, losing five wickets for just 33 runs, to leave them on a precarious position at the end of the day.

Markram, who was playing his first Test match since January 2019, looked in fine form as he scored a fluent 103 off just 131 balls. He was well supported by Dean Elgar, who scored a patient 57 off 144 balls. The pair put on a solid partnership of 135 runs for the second wicket, which put South Africa in a strong position.

However, the Proteas lost their way in the second session, as they lost five wickets for just 33 runs. West Indies bowlers, led by Kemar Roach, bowled with discipline and accuracy to put the South African batsmen under pressure. Roach finished with figures of 4-45, while Shannon Gabriel and Alzarri Joseph chipped in with two wickets each.

At the end of the day, South Africa were in a precarious position, with their score on 166-6. They will need a strong performance from their lower order batsmen if they are to put up a competitive total. West Indies, on the other hand, will be looking to make the most of the situation and put South Africa under pressure.

It promises to be an intriguing day of Test cricket, with both teams looking to gain the upper hand. South Africa will need to regroup and put up a strong performance if they are to get back into the game.
